You'll learn

  • The 3-level mental model: Account, Workspace, Appraisal
  • Where to change status update cadence (3 different places)
  • Where every common setting lives, in one lookup table
  • Why some settings appear in more than one menu and which wins

The 3-level mental model

AwardLettr settings live at three levels. Account = personal, follows you. Workspace = firm-wide, owned by the workspace. Appraisal = this case only. When something exists at more than one level, the more specific level wins (Appraisal beats Workspace beats Account).

By area

Account settings follow you. If you move to a different workspace these settings come with you. Found under the avatar dropdown → Account, or in the sidebar.

  • Profile (name, default representing party, email signature)
  • Integrations (email, SignWell, calendar, cloud storage, CompanyCam, accounting webhook)
  • Scheduling (working hours, max per day, availability zones)
  • Activities and coverages
  • Tags and tag automations
  • Workflow (status update cadence defaults, message rules)

Worked example: status update cadence

Status update cadence is the classic "three places" setting and the source of the most tickets. Here is how the three layers interact.

LayerWhereWhen it wins
Account defaultAccount → Workflow → Status UpdatesUsed on every new appraisal unless overridden below.
Carrier overrideSettings → Carrier Contracts → [carrier]Used on any appraisal whose carrier matches. Overrides account default.
Per-appraisal dateAppraisal → Status Updates tab → "Next due" fieldWins over both. Set this when one file needs a different cadence than the rule says.

Setting the date on the appraisal is authoritative

If you manually set "Next due" on an appraisal, that date is the source of truth. Listings and the dashboard read it directly. Recomputing from cadence rules would silently overwrite your override, so the system does not do that.

Common pitfalls

  • Looking for a personal setting under the workspace menu (or vice versa).
  • Changing status update cadence at the account level and being surprised that one carrier still pings on its own schedule.
