Managing Umpire Alternatives

What happens when the opposing appraiser requests alternative umpires.

Intermediate3 min readUpdated 2024-12-06

You sent three umpire candidates. The opposing appraiser does not love any of them, maybe because they have history with one and never heard of the others. Instead of accepting one of yours, they fire back with three of their own. Now you have to evaluate their list, compare it to yours, and either pick from theirs or counter-propose.

Without a system to manage this, the umpire selection turns into a multi-day email negotiation with spreadsheet attachments and "wait, which list are we on?" confusion. Pick the wrong umpire because you lost track of which round you were in and the case starts on a sour note.

The alternatives view keeps every round of the back-and-forth on one screen. Their suggestions show up alongside yours, you can accept any of them with one click, or you can propose a fresh list. The history is preserved so you can see who suggested whom and when, in case anyone questions the process later.

When Alternatives Are Requested

  • You'll receive an email notification
  • The appraisal shows "Alternatives Requested" status
  • You can view their suggested alternatives
  • You can accept one of their suggestions or propose new ones

Resolving the Selection

Continue the back-and-forth until both parties agree on an umpire. Once selected, the umpire is assigned to the appraisal.
